These cavities grow deeper and bigger if not treated at their initial stages. If you have suspect you have a cavity, it is very important for you to visit your dentist for a consultation and to evaluate if they need to be treated.

Do these cavities have symptoms?

At their initial stages, cavities do not have very evident symptoms. In fact, most patients do not have symptoms at all. The symptoms entirely depend on the location and extent of the cavities. Hence, it is very important to come in for your regular dental visit once every 6 months, so that the Acharya Dental team can treat the cavities at their initial stages. As the decay increases in size, the following symptoms are seen: – Toothache – Sensitivity – Mild to sharp pain on eating something sweet, hot or cold – Pain on biting – Visibly large brownish- black holes.

What are dental fillings Or Dental Restoration?

Here the dentist will drill the tooth clearing up the decayed or deceased portion then prepare an architecture with retentive features to hold the dental restoration. Depending on the type of tooth filling a material is compacted without any air gaps sealing the cavity.
Dental fillings repair cavities and restore the strength, function and structure of the tooth before it turns into a larger dental problem needing root canal treatment or extraction. It’s important to fill a cavity even if it’s not painful as decay can allow bacteria to destroy more of your healthy tooth. Dental fillings prevent further advancement of decay and reinforce your tooth at the same time. It is an ideal solution for small cavities, minor fractures or cracks in teeth and to restore tooth structure damage due to nail biting and other habits.

Amalgam Fillings also known as Silver Fillings

Amalgam fillings are made up of a mixture of metals mixed with mercury. They are less expensive in comparison with composite fillings. Due to their remarkable strength they are durable and can withstand very strong chewing forces. However, they are dark in color and not suited for front teeth. That is why they are used in back teeth such as molars, which are used for chewing food and are not much visible. They last longer than composite resin fillings and are highly resistant to wear. However they corrode over time making the tooth appear darker.

Composite Resins

Composite resin fillings can perfectly match the color of your tooth giving a natural look. Hence they are the best filling material where esthetics are a concern. Since they flawlessly match the shade of your natural teeth, they are also called ‘white fillings’. Made from a combination of plastic resin, fine glass and other materials, this filling material bonds directly to the tooth structure and so requires less removal of healthy tooth structure. Apart from cosmetic areas, it can be used to restore cavities that are small to medium in size in areas of mouth where moderate chewing forces are required. Composite resins tend to stain from tea, coffee or tobacco and are more prone to chip. Generally, composite dental fillings cost more than amalgam fillings.

1How is a filling done?
The Dentist will remove the decayed part of the tooth. During the procedure, you will hear a vibrating sound while the dentist cleans the infected part of the tooth. The procedure is done under local anesthesia and is completely painless. Once that is complete, a filling material will be placed in the tooth and will be strengthened with a blue-coloured light. The filling will be done layer by layer and you will be requested to keep your mouth open for a few minutes. Once filled, the tooth will be polished until the surface is completely smooth and feels natural. There are no dietary restrictions after a filling.
2Are fillings painful?
This is a simple and painless procedure. In case the filling is deep, you will be anesthetized. The dentists will begin by applying a gel to the gums to anesthetize the tissue, prior to delivering local anesthesia to numb the tooth.
3Caring for your filling ?
It is common to experience some amount of tooth sensitivity and gum soreness after getting a dental filling done. Avoid hot and cold food and drinks for at least 24 hours afterwards and do not bite down on hard, sticky or tough foods.
If you were numbed with an anesthetic, do not eat or drink anything until it has worn off. If sensitivity continues after a few days or gets worse contact your dentist immediately as it is something that needs to be addressed.
4For how long do fillings last?
With proper care and maintenance, fillings can last for many years. Recent studies have indicated that an average life of a dental filling is 7-10 years. However, many patients have successful fillings for much longer than that.
